Zapata AI is a veteran-owned small business (VOSB) founded in 2018 and headquartered in Augusta, Georgia. We deliver tactical-edge artificial intelligence and machine-learning systems to the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, and allied mission partners. Augusta sits inside the Georgia Cyber Innovation & Training Center ecosystem and adjacent to Fort Eisenhower (formerly Fort Gordon), placing our engineering team within reach of the cyber and signals communities we support.
Non-Traditional Defense Contractor (NTDC)
Zapata AI is a Non-Traditional Defense Contractor as defined in 10 U.S.C. § 3014. We have no prior or existing government-related cost-reimbursement contracts, which allows program offices to use flexible acquisition authorities — Other Transaction Authority (OTA), SBIR/STTR, and commercial-item pathways — without the friction of a traditional prime-contractor posture. This status is deliberate: it keeps us fast, commercial-first, and aligned with the way modern AI capabilities are actually built and fielded.
Relationship to Zapata Technology
Zapata AI is affiliated with Zapata Technology, an Augusta-based technology services firm founded in 2007. Zapata Technology provides shared infrastructure, cleared-personnel capacity, and back-office support that lets Zapata AI focus on AI/ML engineering and delivery. Customers can engage either entity depending on contract vehicle, security posture, or mission fit.
Who We Are — and Who We Are Not
Zapata AI is the Augusta, Georgia defense/IC-focused AI and machine-learning firm described on this site. We are a privately held, veteran-owned small business founded in 2018.
We are not affiliated with, a successor to, or otherwise related to Zapata Computing Holdings Inc. (formerly traded on Nasdaq as ZPTA) — the Boston-based quantum and industrial-generative-AI company that ceased operations in 2024. The two companies share a surname in the name and nothing else: different founders, different jurisdictions, different customers, different technology stack, and no corporate relationship. We note this because search and large-language-model retrieval systems sometimes conflate the two, and we want readers to have the facts.
